Scroll 9 — Barony Scroll — Award of the Heron
This was a scroll done for the Barony of White Waters. It was one of my first attempts at doing a Celtic design. It was for an Award of the Heron and I had a hard time trying to draw a decent heron. I traced the knotwork border and drew the sprials myself. It was also one of my first attempts at this calligraphy hand.
All in all, I’m not pleased with this scroll either. It was done at the same time as Scroll 8 but I do think I did a better job on this one. I rather like the knotwork border, the heron turned out pretty decent and the calligraphy — while needing alot of work — was not as bad as the example on Scroll 8
Scroll 10 — Middle Kingdom Order of the Silver Oak
This was a scroll I did for an armorer who was becoming a companion of the Silver Oak. He specializes in helms so I incorporated some helms in the lower corners of the border. The rest of the border is filled with acorns that are gilded in gold. This was a design of my own but upon reflection, it doesn’t look period enough to me. I was disappointed with the whitework in the illuminated letter. It was difficult to keep the white paint white, it kept picking up the purple from the gouache below.
The scroll looked much better than it does in this scan. I don’t know if it was the amount of gold used plus the silver paint but I wonder if the reflective nature of this project made an accurate scan impossible.
Scroll 11 — Barony Scroll — Award of the Acanthus Leaf
This was a scroll done for the Barony of White Waters. It was an Award of the Acanthus Leaf. Knowing how bad my last attempt was at drawing Acanthus leaves, I decided to find a design I could trace and get more familiar with the way the leaves are shaped. I traced a 15th Century Pater Noster border design from Paint Your Own Illuminated Letters by Stefan Oliver. I modified the design a bit so that it did not form a complete border on all sides. I painted the design similar to the example in the book but switched the colors around. I was quite pleased with the result and even think my calligraphy — Carolingian hand — has gotten better. My spacing seems to be getting better but I still need to work on making the letter widths more uniform.
Scroll 12 — Barony Scroll — Award of the Acanthus Leaf
This was a scroll done for the Barony of White Waters. It was another Award of the Acanthus Leaf. Seeing as how tracing a design seemed to be helping me learn the leaf form, I decided to find another design to work with. I traced another 15th Century border example from Paint Your Own Illuminated Letters by Stefan Oliver. I kept the design the same but painted it a bit differently, switching colors and adding the barony device in the crest at the top.
I wanted to try a design that used a column layout with the illumination in the center. This would allow me more of an area for calligraphy. I even used the period long “S” style for the first time in my calligraphy. Again, I was quite pleased with the result.
